The World’s Greatest Victory

Introduction

June 18, 1815 is the date of one of history’s most famous victories. On that day, at Waterloo, an army under Wellington met Napoleon’s army and defeated him – freeing Europe from his tyranny. Even today when someone has met a signal defeat, we might say they have ‘met their Waterloo.’ In Scripture we are told of another, greater victory. It is the victory of God’s people over the world through faith. It will be a victory so great, a conquest so glorious, that all others pale before it. Learn more about these victors and their faith in 1 John 5:4-6…

His Nature

In verse 4 you saw that those who overcome are born of God. You have studied that in previous studies through this book. But this passage talks about another birth in verse 6. Read about these two births – Christians’ and Christ’s – in John 1:12-14.

His Birth

What does John 1:14 say about the Son of God?

The Power to Save

Hebrews 2:14-16 explains how Jesus’ birth allows His people to have victory. Notice how clear it is about the humanity of His nature.

Thanks be to God

1 Corinthians 15:55-57 is a beautiful conclusion to these truths.

In Your Own Words

In your own words can you explain why Jesus, the Son of God, being born as a man and dying gives His people victory?

War and Victory

Speaking of victory indicates warfare. Ephesians 6:10-12 clarifies who God’s people are engaged against, and whom they overcome.

Public Enemy #1

Against what is the Christian fighting?

The Witness

You saw earlier at the end of verse 6 that God’s Spirit bears witness to Christ’s nature – divine and human. What is emphasized about the Spirit’s nature?

Truth That Sets us Free

Why do you think God called the Holy Spirit the Spirit of Truth in this context?

Faith is the Victory

This hymn is based on the passage you have just studied.

Application

Do I Believe?

Ask yourself: Do I believe the Spirit’s witness that Jesus is the Son of God and that He came as a man to give me victory?

Overcoming the World

If I believe what God has said about Jesus Christ, am I also believing that He will give me the victory to overcome the world? Am I putting on the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-20) and fighting together with Christ so that I can win with Him?
